McDonald’s testing mobile ordering and payments app (mobilepaymentstoday.com)

Twenty-two McDonald’s restaurants in the Columbus, Ga., market are testing a mobile ordering and payment app called “McD Order.” According to Business Insider, the app links to a credit or debit card, which is charged whenever a customer scans a QR code at the restaurant. The customer’s phone displays an order number, and the customer is prompted to pick up their meal without waiting in line or talking to a cashier.
The app is available in the Apple and Google play stores. The story said about 10 customers a day have been using the app. Gabriel Peres, a manager at one of the test locations, said the company anticipates the service “getting big” because it eliminates the need to wait.
McDonald’s has mobile ordering and payment apps in some foreign markets, and accepts the contactless Isis mobile wallet at many U.S. locations. The Georgia test, however, is the chain’s first branded mobile payments app.
One reader commented that the service works “flawlessly” at McDonald’s restaurants in experience and opined that there is no reason it wouldn’t work here. According to Seeking Alpha, analysts believe mobile payments can lift margins, but note that McDonald’s could have a challenge with store execution.
