NEW YORKDec. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Avatar New York, an award winning New York web design firm, details five important tips for better mobile app development and how brands should begin the process.

It's no secret that the future of technology and marketing resides with mobile. More people are using their smartphones or tablets to browse the Internet than they ever have before. In fact, over 63 percent of cell phone owners use their phone to access the Internet, according to a recent Pew Research survey. About half of those people also use their cell phone as their go-to device when they want to go online. But people are not just browsing websites. They are streaming videos on their phones and making purchases through mobile apps.
Todd Johnson, managing director at Avatar New York, a leading New York web design firm, says mobile app development has become a necessity for brands that want to stay relevant. "If you don't already have a mobile app for your brand or ecommerce website, you're very late to the game," he explains. "With more people using their phones instead of computers to access the Internet, it's really important for brands to develop a smart mobile app. Unfortunately, many brands don't have the experience, and so they ignore the issue due to confusion.
Johnson says brands should follow these tips for mobile app development:
  1. Find and know the users. Brands must target their app for their audience. For instance, brands should know that teenagers may be a little more comfortable with technology, and therefore a more detailed app will suffice. Companies marketing to baby boomers might try an app with a simpler design.
  2. Research the competition. Make sure the idea from the new app includes features that are unique from other apps on the market.
  3. Decide on pricing. Will your app be free, or will it only have a free trial? Brands must decide if and how they want to make money off of this app.
  4. Advertise the app. Marketing is key when launching a new product, and it's the same for unveiling a new app. Apps should be on brand, but also have a special flare to them that will attract users.
  5. Hire expert mobile app developers. "For something so important, brands must make sure they hire a developer with a lot of experience and the ability to create smart, clean, responsive apps," Johnson says. "The brand can do all the planning, but when it comes to execution, it's best to have a development team with a strong track record of delivering great interactive apps."
