Tired of your phone beeping constantly, only for you to find out that an SMS awaits to know if you’d like to avail of services you don’t need? Well, that message could shun the Short Messaging Service for good, and switch over to WhatsApp. The Facebook owned app is reportedly working to rollout an ‘Enterprise Service’ later this year, which will allow businesses and communication companies to send direct messages to anyone who uses WhatsApp on their phone.
A WhatsApp beta user who also actively posts about his adventures with the app on Twitter, has dived deeper into the app’s code, to find many references which point towards accommodation for structured messages which will help businesses.
The user figured that WhatsApp could use the same JSON files concept which Facebook uses to manage its structured messages. References related to WhatsApp adding a commercial colour to its palette were found in Windows, Android, and iOS versions of the existing WhatsApp app.
However, it might not be what it seems. Since the app remains free of advertisements, it could also position itself as a dagger that kills the ‘SMS’ altogether. Which means, your flight tickets, notifications, bank related information or any such important messages could be pushed through WhatsApp. And there could be a marketing side to it too. But they might give you an option to either turn it off completely, or keep it on and select only topics, information about which interests you.
